HalloweenandThanksgiving

It’s October 1st and in my mind, the unofficial first day of Fall. I just couldn’t bring myself to think summer was over yet, especially this past weekend in Boston when temps hit 80 degrees (it was soooo nice!). But alas, the leaves are indeed those beautiful golden colors again and the local Spirit Halloween store has set up shop down the street. I found my favorite boots from the back of my closet, and gifted myself a sweet new leather motorcycle jacket to stir up some excitement about the incoming cool air. It’s not that I dislike Fall, I just really, really, really love summer, so it’s with a tiny bit of disdain that I welcome the season. Once I get over the fact that my addiction to sandals has to be put on hold, the awesome activities of Autumn start to bring back that lovin’ feeling for apple pie. Here are a few things I’m falling for this Fall:

This 101 activity list is really fun, and I especially like #7: “Make cards for special friends and mail them *snail-mail*” Last year I sent our Bird Word Thanksgiving card as seen above, to our close family and friends. (If you want a little chuckle, check out this video of the actual song.)

How awesome is this Pumpkin Maternity Shirt from Mamagama!?!?!

But the very best thing about Fall — my very favorite thing for any season, but especially in the Fall, is cuddling with my boys on a chilly night — just watching a movie or reading them a book (they are really into this series at the moment). If the end of my beloved summer means even more snuggles with my babes, then I’m definitely cool with that. Happy Fall friends!

For this week’s pin of the week, design studio, Turnstyle, has developed a luxurious two-deck set of playing cards inspired by Alice’s magical and surreal adventures in Wonderland. This limited edition set of playing cards would make your average card games into something so much more magical. But really, what I love about these cards is the designer took the essence of an everyday item and made it more interesting.

The cards and tuck boxes will be printed on premium stock with sophisticated black, white, and metallic gold color inks, together with embossing, foil stamping and varnishing for a luxurious look and feel. I want!

Not to mention that the designer, Steve Watson, is a fellow Bostonian (even cooler)! Photography and a full interview can be found on The Dieline.

Design research both inspires imagination and informs intuition through a variety of methods with related intents: to expose patterns underlying the rich reality of people’s behaviors and experiences, to explore reactions to probes and prototypes, and to shed light on the unknown through iterative hypothesis and experiment.  – Jane Fulton Suri, creative director, IDEO

Currently, the largest Ebola outbreak in history is gripping West Africa. Officially, it has claimed the lives of over 1,350 people with many more feared dead or infected. The epidemic is quickly spreading to nearby countries and has arrived in Europe and North America and other countries.

At times, it’s hard to have empathy for others especially when there is a lack of transparency and flow of information. The Ebola in Liberia project commissioned by Liberia’s Ministry of Information and Communication seeks provide a central location for the latest data about the Ebola epidemic with the use of design. Data is collected by various sources on the ground in Liberia.

The collaboration, between the Liberian government and American designers, uses design to communicate information and a powerful message which in hope will result in action needed to stop the epidemic. Through data visualizations, infographics and news, the site is meant to provide relevant information to all its users.

The site is not super sophisticated and in proper crisis design format, it does not need to be. The simple responsive site with embedded visualization technology suffices giving you exactly what you need to know quickly. To learn more about this project, visit www.ebolainliberia.org.

We’re going apple picking at Smolak Farms next week and I’m already trying to think of what I’m going to do with all those apples. My boys treat it like a game of ‘who can get the most’ and we end up with close to 100 apples. You can’t give them away, because everyone else is usually in the same boat! So this year, I’m planning ahead. A big batch of homemade apple sauce is first on my list, followed by some muffins that I can freeze. Here are some of the recipes that I’ll be using, as well as a few other ideas for all your apple needs.
