Every designer needs to understand typography. It helps to explain fundamental concepts and ideas in a visual medium of communication. As we all know, each typeface has its own artistic style. What better way to show off each characteristic and unique aspect than through a type specimen. The typefaces below, v, should be a part of everyone’s all-purpose toolkit.

The specimen in and of itself is a work of art and are fun to look at. Garamond, Baskerville, Futura, and Univers span some three centuries of type design history; thus, there is a reason why they have been successful for so long.

Want something a little bit different and creative for fall gift giving? This week’s pin features a new kind of gift wrapping technique. To make this on your own, it’s simple. Just gather different colors of scrapbooking paper and layer them together to wrap your gifts. Cut out paper feathers and tie everything together with string. The palette of a medium gray, coppery brown, black, and bright melon is a fun one to use for fall and looks beautiful together. Your friend, family member, or significant other will feel extra special that you put the time and effort in to make something so unique (don’t worry, we won’t tell them how easy it really was). You are sure to win some artistic points for this.

The four cool cats you see above make-up Braizen, the kick-ass design and marketing team that I worked with this Spring to redo my brand and website. My friend Jill Smith had hired them to re-work her brand, and I literally drooled over what they created for her. They tout themselves as ‘creatives for creatives’ and I couldn’t agree more. We speak the same crazy arty language, we pine over the same new typefaces, and most of all, we just live and breath design. Braizen was on-time, on-budget, and churned out amazing results. Not to mention how sweet they all are as people. I’m a huge fan and can’t wait to work with them again. They blogged about our match-up here. Be sure to check out my testimonial to their awesomeness below all the great photos and screenshots of the creative process. Thank you Braizen!!!

HalloweenandThanksgiving

It’s October 1st and in my mind, the unofficial first day of Fall. I just couldn’t bring myself to think summer was over yet, especially this past weekend in Boston when temps hit 80 degrees (it was soooo nice!). But alas, the leaves are indeed those beautiful golden colors again and the local Spirit Halloween store has set up shop down the street. I found my favorite boots from the back of my closet, and gifted myself a sweet new leather motorcycle jacket to stir up some excitement about the incoming cool air. It’s not that I dislike Fall, I just really, really, really love summer, so it’s with a tiny bit of disdain that I welcome the season. Once I get over the fact that my addiction to sandals has to be put on hold, the awesome activities of Autumn start to bring back that lovin’ feeling for apple pie. Here are a few things I’m falling for this Fall:

This 101 activity list is really fun, and I especially like #7: “Make cards for special friends and mail them *snail-mail*” Last year I sent our Bird Word Thanksgiving card as seen above, to our close family and friends. (If you want a little chuckle, check out this video of the actual song.)

How awesome is this Pumpkin Maternity Shirt from Mamagama!?!?!

But the very best thing about Fall — my very favorite thing for any season, but especially in the Fall, is cuddling with my boys on a chilly night — just watching a movie or reading them a book (they are really into this series at the moment). If the end of my beloved summer means even more snuggles with my babes, then I’m definitely cool with that. Happy Fall friends!
